Some people only value tangible items while others find them rather useless. Some people may also be rich in money, but not rich in happiness and love. Throughout the book, The Merchant of Venice, a Venetian merchant, Antonio, borrows money from a Jewish moneylender, Shylock, but Shylock plans to get revenge on Antonio because of how he use to treat Shylock. Shylock is viewed as an unhappy character that really isn’t content with anything. In the book, The Merchant of Venice, written by William Shakespeare portrays the ideas that having an abundance of money does not make someone rich in happiness and love.
Sometimes, so much attention is channeled towards what you think you want, that it distracts someone from what is really important. For example, Shylock says, “…two thousand/ ducats in that, and other precious, precious, precious jewels. I would/ my daughter were dead at my foot, and the jewels in her ear! (3. 1. 72-74.)” In this scene, Shylock’s daughter, Jessica runs away with one of his father’s servants, while also taking some of Shylock’s riches. It is obvious that Shylock values nothing more than his jewels and money. He will eventually become very unhappy because his riches could be taken away, and jewels aren’t like people where they have feelings, where they could take care of you, and where they could come back to you if they wanted. If and once Shylock loses his money or valuables, he won’t be rich in happiness at all because he will lose the only thing he valued. In most cases, it would be easy to tell if someone has experienced an abundance of love and happiness in their life if they have more of a content feeling with their life rather than an unsatisfied one. For example, while Antonio and Shylock are at court, Antonio says, “As seek to soften that - than which what’s harder? - / His Jewish heart. Therefore, i do beseech you, / Make no more offers, use no farther means, … (4. 1. 79-81.)” During this scene while both are at court, Antonio’s friends are trying to persuade Shylock to not hurt Antonio, but Antonio tells them to stop trying. If he wasn’t happy with the life that he has been living, then there would be hesitance, and he would portray more of a sad feeling. Antonio has been receiving a lot of love from his friends like Bassanio, and all of these other people that care for him. It’s safe to say that because of all this love and kindness that he has received and given, he would be okay with his life coming to an early end. Antonio can be considered rich even though he does not have the most money or most valuable items in the world. Revenge has to be a big factor in determining whether an individual is rich in life or not. For example, Shylock says, “The pound of flesh which I demand of him/Is dearly bought, ’tis mine, and I will have it:/ If you deny me, fie upon your law! (4. 1. 99-101).” Throughout the whole book, Shylock’s energy is focused on getting his one pound of flesh from Antonio, because Antonio use to kick Shylock and call him names in the past. Because Shylock’s attention was so focused on nothing but hurting Antonio, he ended up becoming really poor. He lost his only daughter Jessica, his jewels and riches, and he lost the pound of flesh that was promised by Antonio if he couldn’t carry out his end of a deal. Shylock could have been trying to live a normal, happy and productive life, but he chose to focus his energy on the wrong things. Doing things with bad intentions will always turn out to be a bad outcome. When someone is of high class or has countless tangible items, it does not mean they are rich. Some of the poorest people are the ones with the utmost amount of money and while everyone might not have the potential to be rich in money, everyone has the potential to be rich in life, while encountering a lot of love and happiness in their life. There are billions of people on Earth, and not one is the exact same as another. Everyone has different perspectives, different mindsets, and different answers than others to the same question. Some people also value certain things more than others do. Some people only value tangible items while others find them rather useless. The word, "rich" can be defined in may ways which usually included people having a lot of money or being rich in something like happiness. In the book The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare portrays the ideas that having an abundance of money doesnʻt make someone rich in happiness and love.
Sometimes people pay attention more to the things that arenʻt as important as what is right in front of their face. In the book, The Merchant of Venice, Shylock says, " There, there, there, there! A diamond gone, that costs me two thousand ducats in Frankfurt. The curse upon our nation was never felt till now! I never felt it til now! Two thousand ducats and other precious jewels. I wish my daughter were dead at my feet and the ducats in her coffin!" During this scene, Shylock could care less about where his daughter could have traveled to. All he cares about is the money that she took. I feel like in this part, he is considered poor, even though he still has money left with him. Shylock is poor because he just lost his daughter, one of his servants, and some of the things he valued most in life, which was his money. Shylock also hasnʻt been doing anything fun in this story, ever, which basically means that he isnʻt rich in happiness either. Revenge also has to be one of the biggest factors in determining whether a person is rich in life or not. In the book, Shylock also says, "The pound of flesh which I demand from him was expensive to buy. Itʻs mine and I will have it! If you deny me, I scorn your laws! The decrees of Venice have no force! I insist on justice!" At this point, Shylock is demanding that he will have a pound of Antonioʻs flesh. He wants the flesh instead of being payed back with money, because of a grudge that he has been holding on Antonio for a long time. I think that having a grudge is a waste of time, because it doesnʻt do anything good for yourself. All Shylock was doing was putting all of his energy into wanting to hurt Antonio and that also can be used as an example as to why Shylock is considered poor despite the amount of money or jewels that he has. He is poor in happiness and love because for years he has only channeled an abundance of negative energy towards Antonio. That is time that he will never get back, and a lot of energy he has wasted. Anyone would be able to know if they were rich in happiness, love and positive energy. This can be determined if they are content with where they are now. In the book during the trial between Shylock and Antonio, Antonio says, "Anything equally as hard you might attempt to do, as try to soften that hardest thing of all -- his Jewish heart. Therefore, I beg you make no more objections, try no other ways, but as soon as conveniently possible , let me know the courtʻs verdict, and let the Jew have his will." This is when Shylock is demanding a pound of Antonioʻs flesh and everyone canʻt believe that someone could really be so cruel. I think that Antonio would be an exceptional example as someone who is rich in not tangible items, but rich in a way where he is content with his life. I think that even if he is kind of depressed and he didnʻt have enough money to pay Shylock back, he came to terms with his fate and finally was ready to let things be. I feel like in order to be in this state of mind, you would really have to be able to live and say that you are okay with the life you are living now. Just because someone is of high class or has countless tangible items, doesnʻt at all mean they are rich, and Iʻm sure that some of the poorest people are the ones with the utmost amount of money. It sounds unbelievable, but itʻs because those kinds of people are alive but arenʻt living. Not everyone will get the chance to be rich in a good way, but everyone always has the potential in doing so. Don’t rely on outward appearances when making judgments.
I agree because appearances can sometimes be misleading. Like sometimes, I see people that look really mean, but I get to know them and I realize that they're actually really nice. When I talk about middle school with some of my friends, most time than not they'll tell me that they thought I was really mean but I actually wasn't. Justice is always blind. I disagree that justice is always blind. On the news sometimes, there were policemen killing other men, but the court let them go because the policemen claimed it as self defense. Justice isn't always blind, because people there are usually some exceptions when someone commits a crime but doesn't go to jail because they had an excuse. A brotherly love between two friends can be just as strong as an intimate love between a man and a woman. I agree that a brotherly love between two friends can be just as strong as an intimate love between a man and a woman. When there's relationships between men and women, I feel like the purpose of that is to be with someone that can help you to grow, support you, and help you reach your individual goals. They're kind of like your best friends, I think, that care about you and your success. But when there's a brotherly love between two friends, I feel like it's similar but not quite the same. It's similar in the way that those to friends can help each other to reach their goals, and support their decisions. In both relationships, the two people are kind of like really good best friends that care about each other. You can break a promise as long as you have a good excuse. I agree that you can break a promise as long as there is a good excuse. I don't remember the last time I broke a promise just because I usually don't make them, but there are some good examples of breaking a promise for a valid reason. Like if I promised my friend in preschool that I wouldn't tell the teacher she was going to climb a tree without the teacher looking, but I told the teacher after because it looked like she was in a dangerous position. Or if two people promise to love each other forever, that could be broken for a good reason. If they aren't happy with each other it would be okay to not be with that person if they are both unhappy people. I think in the end, it'll be okay to break a promise when it comes to health and safety. Love is blind. I disagree for the most part that love is blind. I feel that I would agree if it was a few years ago. But, now I have a lot of friends that get into relationships super fast because the boy looks good, or the girl looks good. They don't care how bad they are treated or how dumb they could be.. I feel like most people now go for the looks. Stereotypes are often right. I disagree with this statement because not all stereotypes are correct and most of the time I feel that they are wrong. There are some boys that people think are gay because they dress more feminine than other guys and they're around girls all time, but they aren't gay. It's just kind of what people think now, because some gay people are like that. I also know that some people don't think that athletes are the smartest because of all the movies that they watch, but that's also wrong because not all athletes are dumb. I think that now we usually just base everything off how other people act and dress instead of getting to know them first and then decide. An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth is a good motto to live by. I disagree with this motto and I think that it's kind of a personal thing. If I gave someone something, I wouldn't expect them to give anything to me or anything like that. For example, when I give food to my friends, I usually do it because I have food and they don't and I don't feel like being mean. I don't expect anything back because I feel that that would be sort of a selfish mentality. But, this does go to a certain extent. So like if I gave my friend a lot of money, I'd want them to pay me back because its a lot of money. But more often times than most, I disagree with this because I usually don't expect anything back when I give to other people. Individuals that encounter intellectual disability have a weaker learning capacity and may experience more negative conditions than an average person will, slowing down their learning even more. An IQ score of an average human is 90 to 110. People that have an IQ score of less than 70 could be mildly affected by this disorder. If someone is to score less than 39, there is a good chance that they are suffering from intellectual disability. Having an extremely low IQ score that is around the range of 40 means that they have a harder time learning, thinking and having the ability to problem solve. People with this disorder take a little longer to learn and process new things. Thatʻs why sometimes, kids that have this disorder go into a separate classroom than other kids. It is because they need to learn at a slower pace that is suitable for them. Along with a slower-paced learning atmosphere, they may also require special and extra training in order for them to really process what they are learning. Itʻs also harder for these people to communicate and execute simple everyday tasks. For example, people with this disorder are limited when it comes to speaking and communicating with others. Saying something as simple as a “Hello” might take a while, because as said before, their learning capacity is more impaired than an average personʻs. Depending on how severe the condition is, that person might require extra help from teachers or specific trainers to perform simple skills. There are also some negative symptoms and effects that will co-occur in people with this disability. Being bipolar, being autistic, aggression, self-injury, having anxiety, problems with managing impassivity are just a few of the effects that may come into play with intellectual disorder. The effects listed are sometimes found in people that donʻt have any disorders at all, but it is harder for people that already have the intellectual disorder, because they might not know how to deal with it. Again, depending on how severe or how mild the actual disorder is for that individual, co-existing disorders could possible make it that much harder for them to learn in classrooms or learn basic skills. Also, because some of these effects are occurring with people that already have this disability, they have to spend more time learning about everyday tasks and dealing with these other effects that could slow them down. For example, if a person like this is trying to learn but they also have a bipolar disorder, they could be learning addition one minute and not being able to concentrate the next because they could be sad. All in all, having a disorder with co-existing effects could slow their learning down even more. People with intellectual disability take a longer time to learn and process than average. They could also be experiencing mental disorders which make it harder to carry out simple tasks.
Intellectual Disability not only affects people’s ability to learn and solve problems but also their adaptive behavior, which are skills necessary for day-to-day life. Such as, being able to communicate effectively, interact with others, and take care of oneself. This disability is known to affect the person’s conceptual skills, social skills, and practical life skills. In the article “Intellectual Disabilities Adaptive Behaviors” by The Gulf Bend Center, Conceptual skills include reading, numbers, money, time, and communication skills and Social skills help us to get along well with others by understanding and following social rules and customs, obeying laws, and detecting the motivations of others in order to avoid victimization and deception. This affects their ability to learn and comprehend things which could cause them to have a difficult time getting a job and control their own actions. Another article “MetalHelp.net” talks about people’s practice life skills being affected. These are the skills needed to perform daily life activities. To them feeding, bathing, dressing, occupational skills, and navigational skills aren’t as simple. Normal people think these simple task are hard for them but think of the hassle people with disability have and how much harder they have to work. They have to put extra effort into everything they do just to keep up with rest. To be diagnosed with Intellectual disabilities they test your adaptive behaviors by giving people a standardized test. In the article, ‘MetalHelp.net’, it says, “These tests compare an individual's score with the average score for the general population. Problems are indicated when a person's score is below the score of 97.5% of the population”. This explains that people that get below the average score of the population they are diagnose intellectually disabled. But another part of the article also says, “However, some people may score above these levels and still meet the criteria for an intellectual disability”. People everyday get downgraded for being stupid or dumb but what if they are actually suffering from Intellectual disability. This shows this standardized test is not a 100% accurate in proving who has this disability. Since this test isn't the most accurate it proves that people could have an intellectual disability and not know and vise versa. People that have to encounter intellectual disability usually have a harder time executing regular tasks that will take an average person no more than a few moments. Itʻs important to understand that people with this disorder will most likely have to work harder to keep up with an average person when it comes to performing basic skills and being able to learn. In everyday life, people are constantly wasting their time doing things that they donʻt want to do; things that donʻt make them happy. We just go to our jobs to get the money. We just go to school for education, but it isnʻt really what we want to do. Thatʻs not what makes us happiest. “A Coney Island Life” by James L Weil is about doing what makes you happy for as long as you possibly can. The poem talks about doing more of what you really want to do until you canʻt do it anymore.
Making the most of our life is important, so that we donʻt live with any regrets. The poem states, “I take perhaps my last ride on this planet carousel.” The person knows that this ride might be his last, but he wants to make the most of it. They also knows that time is running short. With time running short and wanting to make the most of everything, we tend to do things that make us happy. We do that because we know we donʻt have a lot of time so we experience as much as we can. This poem also mentions, “How many more times round I have to catch that brass-ring-sun” The brass-ring-sun is a keyword for one last ride that would be free of charge. This line indicates how he wants to ride again, and catching the brass-ring-sun is the only way he would receive the opportunity. This last ride is important for him because this is the only way that he will be able to do what makes him happy for a little longer. These parts of the poem tells the audience to make use of all the time that we have left here to experience everything we can. To do what makes us fully satisfied. This poem also talks about how we have so little time to do everything we want. It says, “Now arms filled with dolls I threw so much for” The person is realizing that they donʻt really want the dolls. The dolls donʻt keep them satisfied anymore, and thereʻs something else that they want instead. He wants to experience something more. He wants to do more of what is making him happy but he realized it too late. This line in the poem tells the readers that this person might be feeling like they wasted their time and effort when they could have been spending it on something that made them happier. The poem also mentions, “And seen my helium hopes break skyward without me” Everything that they had hoped and wished for had been lost because he ended up not getting it back. It also tells the audience about lost opportunities, because his hopes and dreams left him behind. This is possibly because he didnʻt pay attention to his hopes and dreams. He was probably too focused on something else that he wasnʻt paying enough attention to doing what he actually loves. Concluding everything, thereʻs so little time left. Wrapping all of it up, the poem is telling us that we shouldnʻt dwell on one thing, because something else could have made us happier. We should do more of what makes us happy, and less of what we feel obligated to do. In the end, if we donʻt do what makes us happy, we will run out of time being filled with regrets, “what ifs” and lost dreams. |
