Individuals that encounter intellectual disability have a weaker learning capacity and may experience more negative conditions than an average person will, slowing down their learning even more. An IQ score of an average human is 90 to 110. People that have an IQ score of less than 70 could be mildly affected by this disorder. If someone is to score less than 39, there is a good chance that they are suffering from intellectual disability. Having an extremely low IQ score that is around the range of 40 means that they have a harder time learning, thinking and having the ability to problem solve. People with this disorder take a little longer to learn and process new things. Thatʻs why sometimes, kids that have this disorder go into a separate classroom than other kids. It is because they need to learn at a slower pace that is suitable for them. Along with a slower-paced learning atmosphere, they may also require special and extra training in order for them to really process what they are learning. Itʻs also harder for these people to communicate and execute simple everyday tasks. For example, people with this disorder are limited when it comes to speaking and communicating with others. Saying something as simple as a “Hello” might take a while, because as said before, their learning capacity is more impaired than an average personʻs. Depending on how severe the condition is, that person might require extra help from teachers or specific trainers to perform simple skills. There are also some negative symptoms and effects that will co-occur in people with this disability. Being bipolar, being autistic, aggression, self-injury, having anxiety, problems with managing impassivity are just a few of the effects that may come into play with intellectual disorder. The effects listed are sometimes found in people that donʻt have any disorders at all, but it is harder for people that already have the intellectual disorder, because they might not know how to deal with it. Again, depending on how severe or how mild the actual disorder is for that individual, co-existing disorders could possible make it that much harder for them to learn in classrooms or learn basic skills. Also, because some of these effects are occurring with people that already have this disability, they have to spend more time learning about everyday tasks and dealing with these other effects that could slow them down. For example, if a person like this is trying to learn but they also have a bipolar disorder, they could be learning addition one minute and not being able to concentrate the next because they could be sad. All in all, having a disorder with co-existing effects could slow their learning down even more. People with intellectual disability take a longer time to learn and process than average. They could also be experiencing mental disorders which make it harder to carry out simple tasks.
Intellectual Disability not only affects people’s ability to learn and solve problems but also their adaptive behavior, which are skills necessary for day-to-day life. Such as, being able to communicate effectively, interact with others, and take care of oneself. This disability is known to affect the person’s conceptual skills, social skills, and practical life skills. In the article “Intellectual Disabilities Adaptive Behaviors” by The Gulf Bend Center, Conceptual skills include reading, numbers, money, time, and communication skills and Social skills help us to get along well with others by understanding and following social rules and customs, obeying laws, and detecting the motivations of others in order to avoid victimization and deception. This affects their ability to learn and comprehend things which could cause them to have a difficult time getting a job and control their own actions. Another article “MetalHelp.net” talks about people’s practice life skills being affected. These are the skills needed to perform daily life activities. To them feeding, bathing, dressing, occupational skills, and navigational skills aren’t as simple. Normal people think these simple task are hard for them but think of the hassle people with disability have and how much harder they have to work. They have to put extra effort into everything they do just to keep up with rest. To be diagnosed with Intellectual disabilities they test your adaptive behaviors by giving people a standardized test. In the article, ‘MetalHelp.net’, it says, “These tests compare an individual's score with the average score for the general population. Problems are indicated when a person's score is below the score of 97.5% of the population”. This explains that people that get below the average score of the population they are diagnose intellectually disabled. But another part of the article also says, “However, some people may score above these levels and still meet the criteria for an intellectual disability”. People everyday get downgraded for being stupid or dumb but what if they are actually suffering from Intellectual disability. This shows this standardized test is not a 100% accurate in proving who has this disability. Since this test isn't the most accurate it proves that people could have an intellectual disability and not know and vise versa. People that have to encounter intellectual disability usually have a harder time executing regular tasks that will take an average person no more than a few moments. Itʻs important to understand that people with this disorder will most likely have to work harder to keep up with an average person when it comes to performing basic skills and being able to learn.

In everyday life, people are constantly wasting their time doing things that they donʻt want to do; things that donʻt make them happy. We just go to our jobs to get the money. We just go to school for education, but it isnʻt really what we want to do. Thatʻs not what makes us happiest. “A Coney Island Life” by James L Weil is about doing what makes you happy for as long as you possibly can. The poem talks about doing more of what you really want to do until you canʻt do it anymore.
Making the most of our life is important, so that we donʻt live with any regrets. The poem states, “I take perhaps my last ride on this planet carousel.” The person knows that this ride might be his last, but he wants to make the most of it. They also knows that time is running short. With time running short and wanting to make the most of everything, we tend to do things that make us happy. We do that because we know we donʻt have a lot of time so we experience as much as we can. This poem also mentions, “How many more times round I have to catch that brass-ring-sun” The brass-ring-sun is a keyword for one last ride that would be free of charge. This line indicates how he wants to ride again, and catching the brass-ring-sun is the only way he would receive the opportunity. This last ride is important for him because this is the only way that he will be able to do what makes him happy for a little longer. These parts of the poem tells the audience to make use of all the time that we have left here to experience everything we can. To do what makes us fully satisfied.
This poem also talks about how we have so little time to do everything we want. It says, “Now arms filled with dolls I threw so much for” The person is realizing that they donʻt really want the dolls. The dolls donʻt keep them satisfied anymore, and thereʻs something else that they want instead. He wants to experience something more. He wants to do more of what is making him happy but he realized it too late. This line in the poem tells the readers that this person might be feeling like they wasted their time and effort when they could have been spending it on something that made them happier. The poem also mentions, “And seen my helium hopes break skyward without me” Everything that they had hoped and wished for had been lost because he ended up not getting it back. It also tells the audience about lost opportunities, because his hopes and dreams left him behind. This is possibly because he didnʻt pay attention to his hopes and dreams. He was probably too focused on something else that he wasnʻt paying enough attention to doing what he actually loves. Concluding everything, thereʻs so little time left.
Wrapping all of it up, the poem is telling us that we shouldnʻt dwell on one thing, because something else could have made us happier. We should do more of what makes us happy, and less of what we feel obligated to do. In the end, if we donʻt do what makes us happy, we will run out of time being filled with regrets, “what ifs” and lost dreams.
