THEME
In the book, Night, written by Elie Wiesel, someone can perform callous acts towards others and dehumanize people, but still think that their actions are unerring. CHARACTER While experiencing something that is onerous or challenging and difficult, Elie displays that having a purpose as to why he continues to fight, is what separates someone from life and death during this time. “My father’s presence was the only thing that stopped me. He was running next to me, out of breath, out of strength, desperate. I had no right to let myself die. What would he do without me? I was his sole support.” (pg. 87) “My father had huddled near me, draped in his blanket, shoulders laden with snow. And what if he were dead, as well? I called out to him. No response. I would have screamed if I could have. He was not moving. Suddenly, the evidence overwhelmed me: there was no longer any reason to live, any reason to fight. ” (pg. 98)
